A National Celebration Takes Shape

Lugogo Indoor Arena in Kampala will host the inaugural Uganda Cultural Basketball Festival on 20 December 2026. Bringing sport and cultural expression together, the event invites communities from across the country to celebrate their shared national identity while showcasing the traditions that make each region distinctive. Its guiding message is simple: every culture, every tribe, every region—one Uganda.

Presented by Sports With Me Marketing Agency (SWM), the festival is designed as more than a basketball tournament. Music, dance, traditional attire, food, fashion and entertainment will help create a gathering where people can encounter the breadth of Uganda’s cultural heritage. The aim is to bring Ugandans together not to compete over their differences, but to take pride in the many histories and identities that contribute to a common sense of belonging.

Eight Teams, Four Regions

The basketball programme will feature eight regional teams: four men’s teams and four women’s teams representing Northern, Eastern, Western and Central Uganda. Each region is expected to select its strongest eligible male and female players, who will compete for the tournament’s top prize and regional bragging rights.

The selection vision also makes room for emerging talent. Regional teams are expected to include promising players from beyond top-flight basketball, including athletes from high schools and grassroots communities. Whether a player competes at an elite level, in school tournaments or on a village court, the festival’s message is that ability deserves an opportunity to be seen.

Ugandans living abroad may also be eligible for selection if they originate from the region they wish to represent and satisfy the tournament’s eligibility requirements. In this way, the event hopes to connect regional heritage with talent wherever Ugandans live. For aspiring players, the prospect of wearing their region’s colours offers a chance to represent both their basketball ability and their roots.

Culture at the Heart of the Festival

Traditional attire will be an important part of the celebration. Players, cultural delegations, participants and guests will be encouraged to wear clothing that reflects their communities. Traditional garments, accessories, regional colours and contemporary cultural designs can all help express the identities visitors bring to Lugogo.

The experience will extend beyond the court, with traditional food, music, dance, fashion, storytelling and entertainment forming part of the festival’s cultural showcase. From the gomesi and kanzu to the many distinctive outfits worn by Uganda’s communities, attendees will have an opportunity to honour heritage and appreciate traditions from across the country.

An Invitation to Take Part

Fans will be central to the occasion. Their presence, enthusiasm and cultural pride can help turn a day of competition into a nationwide celebration. Supporters are invited to come ready to cheer for the teams, enjoy the performances and share in the festival atmosphere.

On 20 December 2026, Lugogo Indoor Arena will bring basketball and cultural celebration together under one roof. The festival offers Ugandans a chance to support regional teams, discover the country’s cultural richness and celebrate what connects them. Bring your traditions, wear your heritage and join a gathering built around a shared idea: a diverse Uganda, united through sport and culture.
